Introduction
Conversion therapy, also known as ‘reparative therapy’, is a harmful and discredited practice that aims to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity through so-called ‘therapeutic means’. This approach is based on the deeply flawed belief that being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+) is a mental disorder that needs to be cured. These practices have been widely condemned by major medical and psychological institutions due to the trauma that they cause.
As a training provider, we are committed to the complete rejection of conversion therapy in any form. This means that we do not practice, teach or support it. We are commited to overtly challenging its use or application as or within a therapeutic space.
We are making this statement so that anyone considering a career path that includes this kind of provision knows that we are not the right training provider for them.
By extension: Neuro-normative conversion therapy
Neuro-normative conversion therapy describes any practice that aims to ‘normalise’ the behaviour of neurodivergent individuals, often by suppressing their natural tendencies and ways of being.
As a training provider, we reject neuro-normative conversion therapy. We believe it ultimatly traumatises those it is intended to help, compromising their authenticity, ability to self-regulate and robbing them of the ability to self-express congruently and without shame.
We embrace neurodiversity and take an affirming position with our colleagues, trainees, and other stakeholders, including clients. We will always include neurodiversity affirming workshops (led by neurodivergent therapists) as part of our core training programme.
