Intake Ethos:

At Long Valley Therapy Training, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, open, and diverse learning environment grounded in professional and ethical standards. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds who share a commitment to personal growth, empathy, and a genuine desire to support the wellbeing of others. Across all our programmes, from introductory to advanced, we seek individuals who bring open-mindedness, a respect for difference, and a readiness for self-exploration.

We place high value on human diversity, including the richness of intersectional identities. Our programmes align with the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society’s (NCPS) Code of Ethics, which emphasises respect, inclusion, and non-discrimination as essential to ethical practice. We seek applicants who share these values, as they are fundamental to compassionate, professional care. Our goal is to prepare therapists and supervisors who are not only skilled in theory and practice but are also committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for clients from all walks of life.

We particularly value individuals who balance being relatable and professional, respect the boundaries of the therapeutic space, and are open to building positive, supportive relationships with their peers. This capacity for professional warmth and boundary-setting is essential in fostering a learning environment where all participants feel supported and valued.

Training with us is both an academic and an emotional commitment, requiring flexibility, openness to growth, and a willingness to engage deeply with one’s own beliefs and biases. We encourage applicants ready to embrace the complexities of human experience and to develop skills that go beyond theory, grounded in relational depth and ethical awareness.

Our commitment to these principles, aligned with the NCPS Code of Ethics, reflects our dedication to developing compassionate, ethical practitioners who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of their clients and communities.

Applying:

Before you register for a training programme, please ensure that you have carefully read the related page and fully understand the level of commitment for your chosen programme.

Consider:

  • the financial cost
  • academic level
  • time commitments
  • entry requirements (conditional places will be offered to applicants still studying a prerequisite qualification)

We ask you to submit a personal statement as part of your application, so we can get to know you beyond your qualifications. This helps us understand why you chose our programme, how well you align with our values, and your readiness for the personal, ethical, and emotional demands of the training.

*You will need to prepare this ahead of time and have the file ready for upload (Word, PDF etc.)*

  • For entry level courses we recommend you write approximately 500 words
  • For the Accredited Diploma, Supervision or other Advanced training you should aim for at least 800.

When writing a personal statement, it’s important to clearly articulate your readiness, aspirations, and ability to work at a professional level. Here are some guidelines to help you write a compelling personal statement:

  1. Introduction: Start with a brief introduction about yourself and your interest in counselling. This could include a personal story or experience that sparked your interest in the profession.
  2. Readiness: Discuss your readiness for the training. This could include relevant academic qualifications, work experience, or personal qualities that make you suitable for the role. Be specific and provide examples where possible. You should also comment on your ability to work at a professional level.
  3. Aspirations: Let us know about your hopes for the training! What are your long-term plans? How do you see your career unfolding?
  4. Writing Style: Your personal statement is a chance to showcase your writing style.
  5. Ensure your statement is well-structured, clear, and free of spelling and grammatical errors.
  6. Use a first-person narrative to authentically communicate your position.
  7. Showcase your journey of self-awareness and growth.
  8. Any citations must be referenced using the Harvard style.
  9. Strengths and Obstacles: Reflect on your strengths and personal obstacles. Be honest and self-aware in your assessment.
  10. Conclusion: Conclude your statement by summarising your key points and reaffirming your interest and suitability for the counsellor training.

You will also need a scan of your recent counselling qualification (if applicable) for uploading!

Gathering information and documents

You will be asked to upload relevant evidence and information for the programme that you are applying for. The Moodle enrolment portal will walk you through this one step at a time.

IMPORTANT: Your progressed will be saved as you complete the various stages and you can resume by visiting our Moodle login page  (the link is also available in the main menu of this website).

Interviews

We like to meet all prospective students to get know you a little, hear about your hopes for the training and to make sure that it is a good fit for you. Once you have applied, a member of the team will be in touch to arrange an interview.

Your interview will consist of a friendly chat about your hope and aspirations for the training. We might ask questions about your personal statement and you are very welcome to ask us questions, so you might want to prepare some. We will also ask you to engage in a short (10-15 minutes) skills demonstration

Outcome

All places offered are subject to interview and awarded at the discretion of the team. We carefully review each application and conduct interviews to assess the suitability of each candidate. We are likely to prioritise candidates who demonstrate relevant experience, strong motivation, emotional resilience, and alignment with our programme’s values. Conversely, we will reject applications if the candidate does not meet the necessary qualifications, lacks relevant experience, or does not demonstrate the emotional resilience necessary for the demands of the programme (interview nerves are expected and will not be held against you). Our aim is to select candidates likely to succeed, who will represent the counselling profession well and safeguard the wellbeing of clients through a discerning selection process.

We are committed to equal opportunities and a fair selection process and we welcome applications from anyone who meets the intake criteria.

Deposits & Contracts

If, following the interview, everyone is happy to move forward, you will need to formally enrol. A non-refundable deposit will be due and a contract will be generated for you to sign. Once this has been completed, your place will be secured. Details of how to make payment will be emailed to you as part of the formal offer.

In addition to demonstrating your commitment, the deposit covers the cost of interviewing, processing applications and securing essential resources for the course. For this reason a refund of the deposit will only be issued if the course is cancelled or significantly changed by us. In this unlikely scenario, a full refund will be issued to your original payment method.
